Previously I wrote about the Positive Effects of Social Dancing. Even if I would like to talk only about the upsides, there are some downsides to social dancing too. Not that many, but some.
This is an excerpt from one of my books - "The Secrets of Social Dance - How to Become a Popular Dancer" which you can find on Amazon.
If you have spent any time in the scene, I think you know that it is almost addictive. People who don't dance can have a hard time understanding this feeling.
We might start with a class per week. Then we start going out to dances. Maybe once a week at first, and then increasingly more. We sign up for more classes, we go out even more. We might start going to festivals on the weekend.
It is like a drug. The more we get, the more we want. And it is not that easy to stop. We keep wanting more.
This can cause some side effects. I think it is pretty rare that people start skipping work. Heavy drugs can cause that effect. But late nights on the dance floor can maybe affect performance at work a little bit, especially after a long weekend with late nights dancing in a festival.
And something that many social dancers experience is that they lose some of their other friends, who don't dance. These friends might complain, "we don't meet anymore," "you're only dancing all the time," or something similar.
Whether this is positive or negative depends totally on those other friends. What influence did they have in your life? If it was a positive one, then probably it isn't good to lose touch with them. But if they had a negative influence, then this might not be a problem.
Still, I would guess most people appreciate their friends and don't want to lose them, so I have to assume that dancing too much can negatively affect friendships. Our social life is essential, so I can only recommend keeping healthy relationships with friends and family.
Sometimes we take up social dancing and never stop. But some people also dance for a period in their life and then stop, for different reasons. Life can change. It might no longer be possible. In the dancing world, we meet many new friends. But they are also our "dance friends" that are very connected to this world. If you stop dancing, that friendship can slowly die out. The connection point is not there anymore. So that is another reason why it is a good idea to take care of our other friends.
And finally, if you get really into dancing and go to many parties, classes, and festivals, it might affect your finances. It can be hard to spend money on other things. But it is always a choice we make. I have never heard of anyone going into debt to keep going to festivals. It is not an addiction in the same way that drugs are an addiction. And it is not an unhealthy habit to dance a lot, on the contrary.
So, as long as you don't go into debt, you just have some financial priorities and are paying for happiness in a way.
Have a nice day!
